We believe in creating a community of real people behind their accounts, this is why we encourage people to provide their full name. In order to preserve some anonimity we keep the last name to the first initial. It's then up to the users to decide whether to fully disclose their identity (by way of including their last name in the username) or to keep it to first name and last name initial. We believe this approach will help achieve our goals of creating a safe space for everyone to share their thoughts.
